This week we will be reviewing the words from chapters 7 - 9. That's 60 words!!! Students can bring in all 60 of their flash cards on Thursday, December 11th to earn extra credit (5% points) for their test. Don't forget those study notes on Friday - study with an adult for 15 minutes and get another 5% added to your test grade.

Homework Help

I just found out something VERY cool today! The library has an on-line service that helps students with homework. It's an on-line classroom the is available every day from 2 - 11 pm.



Here's how they explain it:

Homework Chat offers students in grades 3-12 the opportunity to work with expert tutors in a “online classroom” on a wide range of subjects, including: math, science, social studies, and English. Tutors are available seven days a week, from 2:00-11:00 p.m. If you haven’t used the service before, please read through our instructions for first time users and information about downloading the online classroom.





Students will have to enter their library card information in order to use this AWESOME service.

Accelerated Reader Mid-Term Cut-off!!!

Students are working toward a mid-term goal of 5 points. The cut-off is Friday, September 26th!!!!

The end-of-the-quarter goal is 25 points. Many students have not even taken a test yet - ask your daughter/son how they're doing with their goal.

EXTRA CREDIT!!!

Students can get extra credit for doing what they SHOULD!!!

1. On Friday, students can bring in a note signed by the parent that says they studied vocabulary together for AT LEAST 15 minutes. If I get this note, I will automatically add 5% onto the student's vocab quiz grade.

2. Every 3 units, we will take a TEST on all 60 words. If students bring in ALL 60 flashcards from those units on the Thursday before the test, I will add %5 onto their test grade. A note signed by a parent will add 5% as well, so a student could get 10% added onto their vocab test. That's a full letter grade!!!

Literary Terms

If you are reading this, your child responsibly gave you a piece of green paper to sign. I'm so glad they did!!! I hope to update this blog on a regular basis in order to keep you and your teen on track in my Language Arts class.

So what's going on this week? Well, Friday greets us with a test on literary terms. We have been studying them all week - we even finished our flash cards today, so you can help them study Thursday night.

It may seem crazy, but mid-terms are right around the corner! Students are working for 5 points by September 26th. I like to give you an idea of where your child is in their reading, so it doesn't come as a complete surprise at the end of the quarter.

Accelerated Reader - goal and A.R. reading list

Our A.R. goal for the first quarter will be 25 points. Students will be working for a goal of 5 points for the mid-term which isn't too far away! We will read in class every day, and Homeroom time on Wednesdays is a D.E.A.R day - Drop Everything And Read!

A little more about vocab...

On a normal week, we follow this schedule:
Monday - Vocabulary in Context and Choosing the Right Word
Tuesday - Complete the Sentence and Synonyms & Antonyms
Wednesday - Create Flash Cards using index cards
Thursday - Review for Quiz
Friday - Quiz

If we have a four day week, we will do ALL vocabulary exercises on day 1 of that week.

Every 3 units, we take a week to review the 60 words and take a test on Friday.
